Lowest top tax rates: every country ranked

Every country in the calculator, ranked by its top marginal rate — the rate charged on the last slice of income, not the average across a salary. Eleven countries sit at 0%. Guatemala is next at 7%, and six countries share 10%: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Romania and Serbia. At the other end of the table, Denmark's top rate is 60.5%. A low top rate does not guarantee a low bill, so the table also shows what each system actually takes from a US$100,000 salary.

Ranked by lowest top marginal rate at a gross salary of US$100,000, converted into each country's currency at the 28 October 2026 snapshot rates and run through the same engine as the country calculators. A dash in the "applies above" column means a flat tax: the top rate is the only rate, so it applies from the first unit of taxable income.

FAQ

Questions about this ranking

Romania's top rate is 10% and it is also its only rate, so the tax on a $100,000 salary is a flat $10,000. But Romanian employees also pay 35% of gross pay in pension and health contributions — $35,000 at this salary. The total effective rate is 45.00%, which puts Romania near the top of the highest-tax ranking even while it sits near the top of this one.
A dash means the country has a flat income tax: the top rate is the only rate, so there is no threshold above which it starts — it applies from the first unit of taxable income after allowances. Where a figure is shown, such as Singapore's top rate of 24% above S$1,000,000, the system is progressive and that is where the highest band begins.
Denmark, at 60.5%. That rate applies only to income in the highest band; on a $100,000 salary the Danish model takes $38,409 in total, an effective rate of 38.41%. Austria (55%) and Sweden (52.38%) have the next highest top rates. The gap between a top rate and an effective rate is the allowances and lower bands doing their work.
Only if the rise falls inside the top band. The rate on extra income is the marginal rate for the band the extra income lands in, which for most employees is a middle band, not the top one. Each country calculator shows the marginal rate for the salary you enter, alongside the effective rate.
How this ranking was built. Every figure comes from Krynto's own calculator engine run on the US$100,000 salary for the standard case: a single employee, employment income only, standard allowance and standard deductions only, no personal credits or family circumstances. The salary is converted at the currency snapshot of 28 October 2026 (ECB reference rates plus the open.er-api snapshot — a dated snapshot, not live market prices). The full method, including what the model leaves out and why, is on the Methodology page. Estimates only — not tax advice.
