The system

How income tax works in Tunisia

The current scale dates from the Finance Law 2025 and has applied since 1 January 2025. After the expenses deduction, income is taxed at 0% up to TND 5,000, 15% up to 10,000, 25% up to 20,000, 30% up to 30,000, 33% up to 40,000, 36% up to 50,000, 38% up to 70,000 and 40% above that. Older guides showing a top rate of 35% describe the previous scale.

The CNSS employee rate is 9.68% of pay with no ceiling. Since 1 January 2025 that figure includes a 0.5% contribution to the unemployment insurance fund; the 9.18% rate still quoted in many places no longer applies. The calculator uses the single standard case, so the TND 300 head-of-household allowance and the child allowances are excluded, and so is the 0.5% social solidarity contribution (CSS) that runs through 2026.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Eight-band scale in force since 1 January 2025 (Finance Law 2025, Law 2024-48 art. 36)
  • Professional expenses are deducted at 10% of gross, capped at TND 2,000 a year; the TND 300 head-of-household allowance and child allowances are not part of the single standard case and are excluded
  • CNSS employee rate is 9.68% since 1 January 2025 — it includes the new 0.5% unemployment insurance fund contribution; the older 9.18% figure still shown by many sources no longer applies. Contributions are uncapped
  • The 0.5% social solidarity contribution (CSS) payable through 2026 is excluded

FAQ

Tunisia tax — frequently asked questions

Tunisia deducts professional expenses at a flat 10% of gross pay before the tax scale is applied. The deduction is capped at TND 2,000 a year, so it stops growing once pay passes TND 20,000.
It is 9.68%. The Finance Law 2025 added a 0.5% unemployment insurance contribution from 1 January 2025, lifting the employee rate from 9.18% to 9.68%. The contribution has no ceiling.
The 40% rate applies to taxable income above TND 70,000 a year, after the expenses deduction. Only the income past that point is charged at 40%.
No. The TND 300 head-of-household allowance and the child allowances depend on family circumstances and sit outside the single standard case, so they are excluded. The 0.5% social solidarity contribution is also left out.
