Guatemala Income Tax Calculator 2026

Enter a Guatemalan salary in quetzales and this calculator applies the dependent-employment income tax: a flat Q48,000 personal deduction, then 5% on taxable income up to Q300,000 and 7% above that. It also deducts the employee IGSS social security contribution of 4.83%. In Guatemalan law the IGSS contribution is itself deductible from the tax base, and it is not deducted here, so the tax shown is an upper bound.

The system

How income tax works in Guatemala

Guatemala keeps employment tax simple. Every employee gets the same Q48,000 deduction, the mínimo vital, whatever they earn. What is left is taxed at 5% up to Q300,000 of taxable income and 7% on the excess, which means the 7% rate only starts once gross pay passes Q348,000. There are no further bands, and no allowances that vary with family size in this regime.

The IGSS contribution is 4.83% of gross salary with no ceiling. In the statutory calculation that contribution reduces taxable income, and employees can also claim a credit for VAT paid on personal purchases, up to Q12,000 a year. This calculator models neither, so the tax it shows is higher than what would be assessed on the same salary. Guatemala taxes Guatemalan-source income only, and foreign-source income is exempt.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Employment (dependent-relationship) income: 5% on taxable income up to Q300,000 and 7% above, after the flat Q48,000 personal deduction
  • In law IGSS contributions are also deductible from the tax base, and employees can claim a credit for personal VAT paid of up to Q12,000 a year; neither is modelled, so the tax shown is overstated
  • Guatemala taxes Guatemalan-source income only (territorial system); foreign-source income is exempt

FAQ

Guatemala tax — frequently asked questions

After the Q48,000 deduction, taxable income is Q352,000. The tax is 5% on the first Q300,000, which is Q15,000, plus 7% on the remaining Q52,000, which is Q3,640, giving Q18,640 in total. IGSS at 4.83% takes Q19,320, so take-home pay is about Q362,040 on the calculator basis. Deducting the IGSS contribution, as the law allows, would cut the tax bill.
The personal deduction is Q48,000 a year. Earn that or less and there is no income tax, although IGSS at 4.83% still comes off pay from the first quetzal, with no ceiling.
It is made up of 2% for illness and maternity cover, 1.83% for the disability, old-age and survivors pension programme, and 1% for accidents. The employer pays a larger share on top. In a real tax return the employee contribution is deductible, which this calculator does not allow for.
No. This page covers employees in a dependent working relationship. Independent workers and small businesses can fall under a separate simplified regime that taxes gross revenue at 5% and 7%, and that regime is not modelled here.
