The system

How income tax works in Bahamas

There is no income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax or net wealth tax for individuals in the Bahamas. Nothing is withheld from wages for income tax and there is no personal tax return for employment income. Government revenue from households comes mainly from VAT at 10% on spending and from business licence fees charged on turnover, neither of which comes out of a payslip.

The one payroll deduction is National Insurance (NIB). Employees pay 4.65% of insurable pay and employers pay 6.65% on top; those rates have applied since 1 July 2024. Insurable pay is capped at $830 a week from 1 July 2026, up from $810 a week before that date, so employee contributions stop rising once pay passes $43,160 a year. The self-employed pay a different rate, covered in the questions below.

What this calculator leaves out

  • The Bahamas levies no personal income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax or net wealth tax on individuals (PwC). Employment take-home is gross pay minus only the National Insurance contribution below.
  • National Insurance (NIB): employees contribute 4.65% and employers 6.65% of insurable remuneration (rates in force since 1 July 2024). The insurable ceiling is BSD 830 per week from 1 July 2026 (BSD 810 per week before that date); the annual cap in this file is the weekly ceiling x52. Self-employed rate is 10.3% and is not modelled.
  • Business licence fees are charged on business turnover, and VAT (10%) applies to consumption; neither is a tax on wages and neither is modelled.

FAQ

Bahamas tax — frequently asked questions

Correct. The Bahamas levies no personal income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax or net wealth tax on individuals, at any level of salary. The calculator shows $0 of income tax whatever figure you enter.
National Insurance at 4.65% of insurable pay, up to the ceiling of $830 a week in force from 1 July 2026. Your employer adds 6.65% on top of your pay; that part is an employer cost and is not taken from your wages.
Contributions are charged on pay up to $830 a week from 1 July 2026 (it was $810 a week before that date). Multiplied by 52 weeks, the annual ceiling is $43,160, so on a salary above that level the contribution stays fixed at 4.65% of $43,160.
No. The self-employed National Insurance rate is 10.3%. This calculator uses the employee rate of 4.65% only, so a self-employed result would understate the contribution due.
