The system

How income tax works in Sri Lanka

The APIT scale has applied since 1 April 2025, and the Inland Revenue Department tables state that they continue for each later year unless replaced. After the Rs1,800,000 personal relief, the next Rs1,000,000 is taxed at 6%, followed by slices of Rs500,000 at 18%, 24% and 30%, and the balance at 36%. Employers apply the scale monthly: on the IRD table, a salary of Rs200,000 a month gives APIT of Rs3,000 a month, and Rs500,000 a month gives Rs86,000 a month. This calculator works on annual figures and reproduces both of those results.

Employees contribute 8% of total earnings to the EPF, with no cap. The employer adds 12% to the EPF and 3% to the ETF, but those are paid on top of your salary and are not shown here. One point that differs from many countries: EPF contributions do not reduce the income taxed under APIT in Sri Lankan law, so the tax base stays as your full pay minus the personal relief. Reliefs for items such as approved donations are excluded from this standard calculation.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Year of assessment 2026/27 (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027). The APIT scale in force from 1 April 2025 (Inland Revenue (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2025) continues for 2026/27: the IRD tables state they apply "for every subsequent year unless other tables are specified". Personal relief of LKR 1,800,000 is modelled as an allowance; the bands then apply to the excess (6% on the first LKR 1,000,000, then 18%, 24% and 30% on LKR 500,000 slices, 36% on the balance).
  • Check against the IRD monthly table: a gross salary of LKR 200,000 a month gives APIT of LKR 3,000 a month, and LKR 500,000 a month gives LKR 86,000 a month; this model reproduces both.
  • Employee EPF contribution is 8% of total earnings with no cap (employer adds 12% EPF and 3% ETF, not modelled). EPF does not reduce APIT taxable income in law, which matches the engine. Employment income reliefs and qualifying payments (for example approved donations) are excluded in this standard case.

FAQ

Sri Lanka tax — frequently asked questions

Personal relief covers the first Rs1,800,000 a year, which is Rs150,000 a month. A salary at or below that level carries no APIT, although the 8% EPF contribution is still deducted from pay.
Rs86,000 a month, the figure in the IRD monthly table. The 8% EPF contribution takes another Rs40,000, so take-home pay is Rs374,000 a month before any other deductions.
The 36% rate applies to income above Rs4,300,000 a year: the Rs1,800,000 personal relief plus the Rs2,500,000 covered by the 6%, 18%, 24% and 30% bands. Only the income above that point is taxed at 36%.
No. In Sri Lanka the 8% employee EPF contribution does not reduce APIT taxable income, so tax is worked out on pay after the personal relief only. This calculator follows the same treatment.
