This calculator turns a Dutch gross salary into a take-home figure using the 2026 Box 1 rates for someone below state pension age. One thing to know before you start: the two Dutch tax credits are left out of the maths, so the result is an upper bound. Your real tax bill will usually be lower, sometimes by a few thousand euros.

Dutch salary income falls in Box 1, which in 2026 has three bands: 35.75% up to €38,883, 37.56% up to €78,426 and 49.5% above that. There is no personal allowance of the British kind. What the Netherlands has instead is levy rebates, tax credits subtracted from the bill after the bands have done their work. The general tax credit is worth up to €3,115 in 2026 and phases out once income passes €29,736, while the employment credit can be worth roughly €5,700 at middle incomes. Neither credit is in this calculator, which is why the figures run high.
The first band hides something most foreign readers miss. Only 8.10 points of the 35.75% are income tax. The other 27.65 points are national insurance premiums covering the state pension (AOW), survivors insurance and long-term care, charged inside the band rather than as a separate payslip line. Above the first band the premiums stop, which is why bands two and three are pure tax. The employee insurances people often ask about, unemployment (WW) and disability (WIA), are paid by the employer and never touch your salary. Occupational pension contributions do come off gross pay in most jobs, but they vary by scheme and are not modelled.
