China Income Tax Calculator 2026

Enter an annual salary in yuan and this calculator applies China's individual income tax bands for resident employees, after the CNY 60,000 standard deduction. Contribution rates and ceilings are set city by city, so the social insurance and housing fund figures use a Shanghai basis as a representative big-city case.

The system

How income tax works in China

Taxable comprehensive income is taxed at 3% on the first CNY 36,000, 10% up to CNY 144,000, 20% up to CNY 300,000, 25% up to CNY 420,000, 30% up to CNY 660,000, 35% up to CNY 960,000 and 45% above that. These bands have been in place since 2019. The calculator applies only the CNY 60,000 standard deduction. The specific additional deductions many employees claim, for children, rent or a mortgage, and supporting elderly parents, are left out, so the tax shown will usually be higher than a real annual filing.

Employee contributions are pension insurance at 8%, medical insurance at 2%, unemployment insurance at 0.5% and the housing provident fund at 7%, each charged on a contribution base capped at CNY 452,772 a year, which is CNY 37,731 a month or three times the local average wage on the Shanghai basis used here. The housing fund rate is set locally between 5% and 12%, and 7% is the Shanghai rate. In law, these contributions are deducted before income tax is worked out. This calculator does not deduct them, so the income tax shown is slightly overstated.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Annual comprehensive-income bands per the Individual Income Tax Law (unchanged since 2019), applied to taxable income after the CNY 60,000 standard basic deduction. Modelled standard case: single resident employee, no specific additional deductions (children, mortgage or rent, elderly care and similar are excluded).
  • Employee social insurance and housing fund rates and caps are set city by city. The cap used here is a representative big-city ceiling: a monthly contribution base of CNY 37,731 (three times the local average monthly wage, Shanghai basis for July 2025 to June 2026), i.e. CNY 452,772 a year, applied to each component. Rates: pension 8%, medical 2% (a small flat monthly amount in some cities is ignored), unemployment 0.5%.
  • Housing provident fund: the employee rate is set locally between 5% and 12% of the contribution base; 7% is used here (the Shanghai rate). Work injury and maternity insurance are employer-paid only and are excluded.
  • In law, employee social insurance and housing fund contributions are deductible when computing taxable comprehensive income. The engine does not deduct social contributions from taxable income, so the income tax shown is slightly overstated.

FAQ

China tax — frequently asked questions

The standard basic deduction is CNY 60,000 a year, so tax starts on income above that. Most employees also qualify for specific additional deductions, for example for children or rent, which lower the taxable amount further; those are not included in this calculator.
Social insurance and housing fund rates and ceilings are set locally. This calculator uses Shanghai figures: a contribution base cap of CNY 37,731 a month and a housing fund rate of 7%. The housing fund rate alone ranges from 5% to 12% across cities, so take-home pay in another city will differ even at the same salary.
Yes, in law employee social insurance and housing fund contributions reduce taxable income. This calculator does not deduct them, which is why the income tax it shows is slightly higher than the amount in a real calculation.
The 45% rate applies to taxable comprehensive income above CNY 960,000 a year, after the CNY 60,000 standard deduction and any other deductions. Only the income above that point is taxed at 45%.
