The system

How income tax works in Zambia

There is no separate personal allowance in Zambia; the tax-free amount is the 0% band itself, ZMW 61,200 a year (ZMW 5,100 a month). Above that, pay is taxed at 20% up to ZMW 85,200, 30% up to 110,400 and 37% on everything above. PAYE is charged on gross pay, and employee pension and health contributions are not taken off first, which is the treatment this calculator follows.

The NAPSA employee contribution is 5% of pensionable earnings up to an insurable earnings ceiling of ZMW 37,236 a month (ZMW 446,832 a year), the figure used here; some payroll guides still show the older ZMW 34,164 monthly ceiling. The NHIMA health line is modelled at 1% of gross pay and should be read as approximate: published sources put the employee share between 0.5% and 1%, and the statutory base is basic pay rather than total gross pay.

What this calculator leaves out

  • 2026 charge-year scale per PwC/ZRA: first ZMW 61,200 a year tax-free, 20% to 85,200, 30% to 110,400, 37% above; there is no separate personal allowance
  • NAPSA employee contribution is 5% of pensionable earnings up to the insurable earnings ceiling of ZMW 37,236 a month (ZMW 446,832 a year) used here — some payroll guides still show the older ZMW 34,164 monthly ceiling
  • NHIMA health insurance employee share is modelled at 1% of gross; sources differ (0.5% to 1%) and the statutory base is basic pay rather than total gross, so treat this line as approximate
  • PAYE is charged on gross pay; employee NAPSA/NHIMA contributions are not deducted first

FAQ

Zambia tax — frequently asked questions

The first ZMW 61,200 a year, equal to ZMW 5,100 a month, is taxed at 0%. There is no personal allowance on top of that band. PAYE starts at 20% on income above it.
The 37% rate applies to income above ZMW 110,400 a year. Income below that point is taxed at 0%, 20% or 30% depending on the band it falls in.
The employee pays 5% of pensionable earnings up to a ceiling of ZMW 37,236 a month (ZMW 446,832 a year). Some guides still show an older ceiling of ZMW 34,164 a month; the higher figure is the one used here.
It is approximate. This calculator uses 1% of gross pay, but published sources put the employee share between 0.5% and 1%, and the charge is based on basic pay rather than total gross pay, so a payslip figure can come out lower.
