The system

How income tax works in Bulgaria

Bulgaria taxes employment income at a single flat rate of 10%, whatever the salary. There are no bands and no standard allowance, so the calculation is simple. In law, the tax base is salary minus the employee's social and health contributions; this calculator applies the 10% to gross pay, so the tax shown is a slight upper bound.

Employees pay 10.58% social security and 3.2% health insurance, 13.78% in total. The contributions are charged on insurable income up to a monthly cap of €2,111.64, which is €25,339.68 a year. That cap applies for January to July 2026 and rises to €2,300 a month from 1 August 2026. The single annual cap used here stays at the lower figure, so contributions on high salaries come out slightly lower than the real second-half amount. The social security rate also varies a little by fund and work category; the standard employee share is used.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so all figures are in EUR (converted at the fixed rate of 1.95583 BGN/EUR where they originate in lev).
  • Flat 10% personal income tax with no general personal allowance for employment income; the tax base in law is salary minus employee contributions, which the engine does not deduct, so tax is a slight upper bound.
  • Employee contributions total 13.78%: 10.58% social security plus 3.2% health insurance, charged on insurable income capped at EUR 2,111.64/month (EUR 25,339.68/year) for January-July 2026; the cap rises to EUR 2,300/month from 1 August 2026, which is not reflected in the single annual cap used here.
  • The social security rate varies slightly by fund and accident category (aggregate 24.7%-25.4%); the standard employee share of 10.58% is used.

FAQ

Bulgaria tax — frequently asked questions

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Amounts that originate in lev, such as the contribution cap, are converted at the fixed rate of 1.95583 BGN per euro, which is how the €2,111.64 monthly cap for early 2026 is derived.
No. There is no general personal allowance for employment income, so the flat 10% tax applies from the first euro of taxable salary. Specific reliefs exist outside the standard case, for example for children, but they are not part of this calculation.
Contributions are charged on insurable income up to €2,111.64 a month for January to July 2026. Above that, the 13.78% stops growing and stays fixed in cash terms. The cap rises to €2,300 a month from 1 August 2026, which this calculator does not reflect, so it slightly understates contributions at high salaries.
Not exactly. The total social security rate varies slightly by fund and by accident-risk category of the job. The standard employee share of 10.58%, plus 3.2% health insurance, is the figure used here and covers the typical employee case.
