The system

How income tax works in Tanzania

PAYE is charged monthly, and the annual figures here are the monthly bands multiplied by twelve: 0% up to TZS 3,240,000 a year, 8% up to 6,240,000, 20% up to 9,120,000, 25% up to 12,000,000 and 30% on income above that. The bands were confirmed for 2026/27 by the Finance Act 2026. The calculator covers mainland Tanzania only; Zanzibar sets its own rates and is not included.

The NSSF contribution is 10% of gross pay with no ceiling. Public-sector staff belong to the PSSSF instead, which is not modelled here. In practice the NSSF contribution comes off pay before PAYE is calculated; this calculator taxes gross pay, so the PAYE figure runs slightly high. A new universal health insurance contribution began a phased rollout in 2026, but it is not yet a standard payroll deduction and is left out.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Mainland Tanzania only (Zanzibar sets its own rates). Monthly TRA bands annualised (×12): 0% to TZS 270,000/month, 8% to 520,000, 20% to 760,000, 25% to 1,000,000, 30% above; bands confirmed for 2026/27 by the Finance Act 2026
  • Employee NSSF contribution is 10% of gross with no ceiling (public-sector staff are in PSSSF instead)
  • In practice the employee NSSF contribution is deducted before PAYE is worked out; this model taxes gross pay, which overstates PAYE slightly
  • The new universal health insurance contribution (phased rollout from 2026) is not yet a standard payroll deduction and is excluded

FAQ

Tanzania tax — frequently asked questions

The first TZS 270,000 a month, or TZS 3,240,000 a year, is taxed at 0%. PAYE starts at 8% on income above that level.
In a real payroll the 10% NSSF contribution comes off your pay before PAYE is worked out, which reduces the tax. This calculator applies the bands to gross pay, so it shows slightly more PAYE than a payslip at the same salary.
No. Zanzibar sets its own employment taxes. The bands and the NSSF contribution here are for mainland Tanzania only.
Private-sector employees pay 10% of gross pay into the NSSF, with no ceiling on the amount. Public-sector staff are in the PSSSF scheme instead, which this page does not model.
