TAX YEAR 2026 · RATES CHECKED OCTOBER 2026

Japan Income Tax Calculator 2026

A Japanese salary is taxed twice over: national income tax in bands from 5% to 45%, plus a flat 10% inhabitant tax for your prefecture and city, with a 2.1% reconstruction surtax on top. Social insurance then takes roughly another 14.7%. This calculator adds the layers up in that order, and the notes below are frank about where the model simplifies a system that resists simplifying.

The system

How income tax works in Japan

The National Tax Agency sets the national bands, which run from 5% on the first ¥1,950,000 of taxable income to 45% above ¥40 million. Before the bands apply, salary earners get an employment income deduction that rises in steps with pay, then a basic deduction. The inhabitant tax is a separate 10% charge on a similar base, with its own ¥430,000 basic deduction, and in practice it is billed on the previous year's income. Employers withhold national tax monthly; the inhabitant tax usually arrives as a separate payroll deduction or bill from June.

Social insurance is where the model has to cut corners, so here they are in the open. Pension (9.15%), health insurance (4.955% on the Tokyo Kyokai Kenpo rate) and employment insurance (0.6%) are real figures with their real salary caps. The deduction side is rougher: the law's stepped employment deduction is flattened to a single 25% with the real ¥1,950,000 cap, the banded basic deduction is set at ¥620,000 even though many employees qualify for ¥1,040,000 under a temporary increase, and social premiums are not deducted from taxable income even though Japanese law allows it. Each shortcut pushes the estimate upward, so read the result as the high side of your real bill.

What this calculator leaves out

  • National income tax bands per PwC / NTA, plus the 2.1% special reconstruction surtax (surtax_pct) and the flat 10% local inhabitant tax on its own taxable base (basic deduction JPY 430,000). Per-capita inhabitant levy (about JPY 5,000) and forest environment tax (JPY 1,000) are fixed amounts and are not modelled.
  • APPROXIMATION - employment income deduction: the real deduction is stepped (for 2026-27 per PwC: minimum JPY 740,000; 30% + 80,000 up to JPY 3.6m of salary; 20% + 440,000 up to JPY 6.6m; 10% + 1,100,000 up to JPY 8.5m; capped at JPY 1,950,000). The engine supports one percentage, so deduction_pct 25 with the real JPY 1,950,000 cap is used. Effective real deduction percentages range from about 33% at JPY 3m salary to 23% at JPY 8.5m, so mid-salary tax is somewhat overstated and the JPY 740,000 minimum deduction is not reproduced at low salaries.
  • APPROXIMATION - basic deduction: JPY 620,000 is the 2026-27 amount for total income (after the employment deduction) between JPY 6.55m and JPY 23.5m. A temporary increase gives JPY 1,040,000 where total income is under JPY 4.89m, which covers many ordinary salaries; for those employees this model overstates national tax. The amount phases out above JPY 23.5m of total income, also not modelled.
  • APPROXIMATION - social insurance: pension 9.15% employee share on standard remuneration capped at JPY 650,000 per month (JPY 7.8m per year, bonus caps ignored); health 4.955% is the Kyokai Kenpo Tokyo employee share with the JPY 1.39m per month remuneration cap (JPY 16.68m per year) - health rates vary by prefecture and insurer; employment insurance 0.6% employee share (general business). Long-term care premiums (ages 40-64) and the child/childcare support contribution are excluded.
  • Social insurance premiums are fully deductible for income tax in Japan; the engine does not deduct them from taxable income, which overstates both national and inhabitant tax. Inhabitant tax is in practice charged on the previous year income; modelled here on the same year.
  • Engine note: surtax_pct is applied by the engine to the combined tax (national + inhabitant), while in law the 2.1% applies to national income tax only - a small overstatement.
  • The high-income minimum tax (from 2025; 22.5% over JPY 330m for 2025-2026) is not modelled.

FAQ

Japan tax — frequently asked questions

National income tax funds the central government and rises in bands from 5% to 45%. Inhabitant tax funds your prefecture and municipality and is a flat 10% for almost everyone. They use slightly different basic deductions, ¥620,000 in this model for national tax and ¥430,000 for inhabitant tax, and inhabitant tax is charged on last year's income rather than this year's.
About ¥1,246,000 in combined income tax and roughly ¥1,158,000 in social insurance, an effective rate close to 30%. Treat it as a ceiling rather than a prediction. The flat 25% employment deduction, the ¥620,000 basic deduction and the missing deduction for social premiums all lean the same way, and a real payroll calculation at this salary usually lands lower.
It is the special reconstruction income tax, added after the 2011 earthquake and running until 2037. In law it applies to your national income tax bill only. This calculator applies it across the combined national and inhabitant figure, which adds a small amount extra, one more reason the estimate runs high.
The per-capita inhabitant levy of roughly ¥5,000 a year and the ¥1,000 forest environment tax are fixed amounts with no percentage to model. Long-term care premiums for ages 40 to 64 are also excluded, as is the deduction Japanese employees get for their social insurance premiums, which is the biggest single gap between this estimate and a real payslip.
