The system

How income tax works in Czech Republic

Most Czech employees pay tax at 15%. The 23% rate applies only to annual gross income above CZK 1,762,812, which is 36 times the 2026 average monthly salary of CZK 48,967. Income below that threshold is taxed at 15% on the full gross amount, with no separate allowance. Against the tax bill, every taxpayer claims a basic credit of CZK 30,840 a year, which this calculator subtracts from the tax; the credit cannot take tax below zero. Credits for a spouse, children or disability exist but are not modelled here.

Employee contributions total 11.6% of gross pay. Social security is 7.1%, made up of 6.5% pension insurance and 0.6% sickness insurance, and it is capped at 48 times the average monthly wage, CZK 2,350,416 for 2026. Health insurance is 4.5% with no cap. Above the social security ceiling, only the 4.5% health contribution keeps rising with pay.

What this calculator leaves out

  • The 23% rate applies to annual gross income above CZK 1,762,812 (36 times the 2026 average monthly salary); everything below is taxed at 15% on gross pay (the super-gross base was abolished in 2021).
  • Every taxpayer gets a basic tax credit of CZK 30,840/year, modelled here as a tax credit subtracted from the tax bill (it cannot take tax below zero); spouse, child and disability credits are not modelled.
  • Employee contributions total 11.6%: social security 7.1% (6.5% pension plus 0.6% sickness, from 2024) capped at 48 times the average monthly wage (CZK 2,350,416 for 2026), plus health insurance 4.5% with no cap.

FAQ

Czech Republic tax — frequently asked questions

The 23% rate applies to annual gross income above CZK 1,762,812. That threshold is 36 times the average monthly salary, so it moves when the official average wage is updated. Only the income above the threshold is taxed at 23%; everything below stays at 15%.
Only the basic taxpayer credit of CZK 30,840 a year, which every taxpayer can claim. It is subtracted from the calculated tax and cannot reduce it below zero. The spouse credit, child tax benefits and disability credits are real but are not modelled, so employees who qualify for them will pay less than shown.
Social security at 7.1% stops at a base of CZK 2,350,416 a year, 48 times the average monthly wage. Health insurance at 4.5% has no ceiling and continues on the whole salary. That is why the total contribution rate falls back to 4.5% at very high incomes.
At 15%, the tax before credits is CZK 180,000. Subtract the basic credit of CZK 30,840 and the income tax is CZK 149,160. Contributions at 11.6% come to CZK 139,200. That leaves take-home pay of CZK 911,640 before any extra credits you might qualify for.
