Earliest tax freedom day at a $100,000 salary

Tax freedom day is the date by which an employee has earned enough to cover the year's income tax and employee contributions; everything earned after it is theirs. At US$100,000, seven countries are done on 1 January because they deduct nothing. Bahrain follows on 4 January and the Bahamas on 7 January. The first country past the 10% mark, Guatemala, reaches its day on 8 February. At the far end of the full list, Slovenia's day is 12 July.

FAQ

Questions about this ranking

The engine takes the effective rate (total deductions as a share of gross pay) and applies that share to the 365 days of the year. A 20.82% effective rate for the United States at $100,000 means the first 76 days of earnings cover the deductions, which lands on 17 March. It is a way of picturing the effective rate, not a real payment date: tax is actually withheld from each payslip.
12 April. The UK effective rate at $100,000 is 27.97%, and 27.97% of 365 days is 102 days, which runs to 12 April. The UK sits just outside this top 30, whose last entry, Costa Rica, reaches its freedom day on 27 March.
Their effective rates at $100,000 are 13.86% and 13.89% — close enough that both round to day 51 of the year, 20 February. The underlying deductions differ: Hong Kong takes $11,563 of tax and $2,295 of contributions, Bulgaria takes $10,000 of tax and $3,888 of contributions.
Because the same number drives both. Tax freedom day is the effective rate expressed as a date, so the order is the order of effective rates at this salary, with ties where two rates round to the same day. The ranking is a different lens on the same calculation, published separately because many readers think in dates more easily than in percentages.
How this ranking was built. Every figure comes from Krynto's own calculator engine run on the US$100,000 salary for the standard case: a single employee, employment income only, standard allowance and standard deductions only, no personal credits or family circumstances. The salary is converted at the currency snapshot of 28 October 2026 (ECB reference rates plus the open.er-api snapshot — a dated snapshot, not live market prices). The full method, including what the model leaves out and why, is on the Methodology page. Estimates only — not tax advice.
