Software engineer salary in India after tax

AmbitionBox puts the average software engineer salary in India at ₹850,000 a year, from a large self-reported sample. On the FY 2025–26 new regime, the salary produces ₹18,750 of tax before rebates — and the Section 87A rebate then wipes it out, because taxable income of ₹775,000 after the standard deduction is within the rebate limit. The only deduction left is the EPF contribution of ₹21,600, so take-home pay is ₹828,400.

Software Engineer take-home pay by country

Each row uses that country's own sourced salary for this profession — the gross pay is not held constant, because the point of the table is what the job actually pays and keeps in each place. US dollar figures use the Krynto currency snapshot of 28 October 2026 (ECB reference rates + open.er-api snapshot), and the ranking is by take-home pay in US dollars.

FAQ

Software Engineer pay in India — questions

Under the new regime, taxable income is ₹775,000 after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The tax on that is ₹18,750, and the Section 87A rebate covers tax in full where taxable income is up to ₹12,00,000, so the bill lands at zero. The rebate is a cliff in the model: earn enough to pass the limit and the full tax becomes payable.
The Employee Provident Fund contribution is 12% of wages, but the statutory wage ceiling for the standard calculation is ₹15,000 a month, so the modelled contribution is 12% of ₹180,000 a year — ₹21,600 — rather than 12% of the whole salary. Many employers calculate EPF on full salary instead, which would take more.
It is an AmbitionBox average built from a very large self-reported sample — a salary-survey figure, not an official median. The sample leans junior and metro-based: the same source shows IT services averaging ₹6.4 lakh and internet companies ₹19.8 lakh, so the average hides a wide spread.
