Spain Salary Tax Guide 2026

Fourteen salaries run through the 2026 combined scale — the state bands plus the standard autonomous-community bands — with the €5,550 personal minimum and employee social security at 6.5%. Regional variation is real: Madrid runs slightly lower, Catalonia and Valencia higher, and the Basque Country and Navarre are outside this scale entirely.

Salary levels are the EUR equivalents of the US dollar amounts in the first column, converted at the reference rate snapshot of 28 October 2026 (1 USD = 0.9 EUR) and rounded to the nearest 500. The US$50,000 row is highlighted. On €45,000 a year, take-home pay in Spain is €31,777 — about €2,648 a month — after €10,298 in income tax and €2,925 in social contributions. Figures model a single employee with standard allowances only.

Reading the ladder

Where the rates change in Spain

The social column stops behaving like a percentage halfway up: contributions are capped at a €61,214 annual base, so the charge reaches €3,991 on a €67,500 salary and then only creeps to €4,395 at the top, where a small solidarity levy of about 0.2% applies above the cap. The tax does the climbing instead, through the 37% and 45% bands, taking the effective rate from 29.4% at €45,000 to 42.3% at €269,500. The modelled tax runs slightly high throughout, because the €2,000 general expense deduction and the deductibility of contributions are not applied.

Spain salaries — frequently asked questions

On €45,000 in 2026, income tax under the combined scale is €10,298 and employee social security is €2,925, leaving take-home pay of €31,777 — an effective rate of 29.4%. Your region can move this: Madrid would take a little less, Catalonia or Valencia a little more.
A salary of €90,000 leaves €57,060 after €28,904 of income tax and €4,036 of social security, an effective rate of 36.6%. The contributions are barely higher than on €67,500 because the contribution base is capped at €61,214.
Employee social security is charged on a contribution base that stops at €5,101.20 a month (€61,214 a year) in 2026. Above the cap only the solidarity levy, around 0.2% for the employee, applies to the excess. That is why the social column rises by just over €400 across the top half of the ladder while the tax rises by tens of thousands.
