Tennessee Salary Tax Guide 2026

Tennessee charges no state income tax on wages, so every rung of this ladder carries the same two federal layers and nothing else: federal income tax under the national bands, and FICA (Social Security and Medicare). The ladder runs ten salaries from $25,000 to $300,000 through that model.

The ladder

Take-home pay at every salary level in Tennessee

On a $75,000 salary the combined deductions in this model are $13,408: $7,670 of federal income tax, no state income tax and $5,738 of FICA, leaving take-home pay of $61,593 — an effective rate of 17.9%.

The $75,000 row is highlighted. FICA is Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500 of wages), Medicare (1.45%), Additional Medicare Tax (0.9% on wages above $200,000), the same on every state's ladder. Figures model a single employee with the standard federal and state allowances only.

Reading the ladder

Where the rates change in Tennessee

Read the ladder from the bottom up. The combined effective rate starts at 11.2% on $25,000 and reaches 28.3% on $300,000, and every step of that climb comes from the federal layer, because the state line is $0 on every rung. The state tax column is the only part of the bill that changes if the same salary is earned in a different state; the federal tax and FICA columns are identical on every state's ladder.

Scope

What this guide leaves out

Tennessee — state layer

  • Tennessee has never taxed wages or salary income
  • The old Hall income tax reached only interest and dividend income; it was phased down from 2016 and fully repealed on 1 January 2021, so Tennessee now has no individual income tax of any kind

The federal layer is the standard United States model: a single employee, the federal standard deduction and no itemised deductions or personal credits. The full method is on the Methodology page.
