Louisiana Salary Tax Guide 2026

Louisiana taxes wages at a single flat rate of 3% on taxable income after the standard deduction (single, inflation-indexed) of $12,875. Federal income tax and FICA sit on top of the state layer, so the combined bill still rises in steps even though the state rate never changes. The ladder runs ten salaries from $25,000 to $300,000 through both layers.

On a $75,000 salary the combined deductions in this model are $15,271: $7,670 of federal income tax, $1,864 of Louisiana state tax and $5,738 of FICA, leaving take-home pay of $59,729 — an effective rate of 20.4%.

Reading the ladder

Where the rates change in Louisiana

Read the ladder from the bottom up. The combined effective rate starts at 12.7% on $25,000 and reaches 31.1% on $300,000, with the Louisiana state line taking $364 of the lowest rung and $8,614 of the highest. The state tax column is the only part of the bill that changes if the same salary is earned in a different state; the federal tax and FICA columns are identical on every state's ladder.

The state layer starts from taxable income — gross pay minus the standard deduction (single, inflation-indexed) of $12,875 — so the first $12,875 of pay carries no Louisiana tax at all, and everything above it is charged at the single 3% rate. Two modelling points in the state file are worth knowing before you rely on a rung; they are listed under "What this guide leaves out" below.

Scope

What this guide leaves out

Louisiana — state layer

  • Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session replaced Louisiana's graduated rates with a flat 3% from 2025 and repealed the old personal exemption
  • The standard deduction is now inflation-indexed: $12,875 for a single filer in 2026 (Louisiana Department of Revenue, R-1306)
  • Withholding tables use 3.09% to cushion under-withholding; the statutory rate modelled here is 3%
  • Louisiana has no local income taxes on wages

The federal layer is the standard United States model: a single employee, the federal standard deduction and no itemised deductions or personal credits. The full method is on the Methodology page.
