Canada Salary Tax Guide 2026

Fourteen salaries run through the 2026 federal bands plus the Ontario provincial layer — the provincial model used across this site — with Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance contributions deducted on top. Other provinces set different provincial rates, so the ladder reads as the Ontario version of a Canadian salary.

Salary levels are the CAD equivalents of the US dollar amounts in the first column, converted at the reference rate snapshot of 28 October 2026 (1 USD = 1.4 CAD) and rounded to the nearest 500. The US$50,000 row is highlighted. On $70,000 a year, take-home pay in Canada is $53,138 — about $4,428 a month — after $11,782 in income tax and $5,080 in social contributions. Figures model a single employee with standard allowances only.

Where the rates change in Canada

The social column tells the story at the top of the ladder: CPP, the second CPP tier and EI are all capped, so contributions freeze at C$5,770 a year once earnings pass the last ceiling around C$85,000, and every rung from C$105,500 up shows the same C$5,770. The tax keeps climbing because the combined federal-Ontario marginal rate rises in steps to 46.16% at the top rungs. Two Ontario charges are not in the model — the Ontario surtax and the health premium — so tax at the higher rungs is understated.

FAQ

Canada salaries — frequently asked questions

On C$70,000 in 2026, the combined federal and Ontario income tax is C$11,782 and CPP plus EI contributions are C$5,080, leaving take-home pay of C$53,138 — an effective rate of 24.1%.
A salary of C$140,500 leaves C$100,097 after C$34,633 of income tax and the maximum C$5,770 of contributions, an effective rate of 28.8%. The combined marginal rate at that level is 37.16%.
Each contribution has an earnings ceiling for 2026: EI stops at C$68,900 of insurable earnings, the main CPP tier at C$74,600 and the second CPP tier at C$85,000. Past the last ceiling the total is fixed at C$5,770 a year, which is why the social column is flat from the C$105,500 rung to the top of the ladder.
