Each row prices the same job in both countries: the gross figures are the same US dollar salary converted into each currency at the reference rates of 28 October 2026 (1 USD = 0.7526 GBP and 1.4047 CAD), rounded to the nearest 500. The last column converts the Canada take-home back into GBP at the same rate and subtracts the United Kingdom take-home, so a positive figure means more take-home pay in the country named. Income tax includes any regional tax, levies, credits and rebates in the standard model. It says nothing about what the money buys locally — see the purchasing-power points in the questions below the table where they apply.

What stands out

The two systems, in short

United Kingdom

United Kingdom taxes a salary through 3 bands from 20% to 45%, with the top rate applying from £125,140. The first £12,570 of salary is covered by the standard allowance. Employee contributions are National Insurance at 8% on pay up to £50,270, then 2% above that; at the $100,000 salary level they add up to $4,678. At the $100,000 level the total deduction is $28,106: $23,428 of income tax and $4,678 of contributions, an effective rate of 28.0%. Rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland; Scottish income tax rates and bands differ.

Canada

Canada taxes a salary through 5 bands from 14% to 33%, with the top rate applying from $258,482. A regional layer, Ontario, sits on top of the national bands. The first $16,452 of salary is covered by the standard allowance. Employee contributions are Canada Pension Plan at 5.95% on pay up to $74,600, CPP2 (second additional CPP) at 4% on pay up to $85,000 and Employment Insurance at 1.63% on pay up to $68,900; at the $100,000 salary level they add up to $4,107. At the $100,000 level the total deduction is $28,762: $24,655 of income tax and $4,107 of contributions, an effective rate of 28.8%. Both sides model a single employee with standard allowances only, so personal deductions, credits and family circumstances are outside the figures. For United Kingdom: Personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000 and is fully withdrawn at £125,140; this taper is not modelled by this calculator, so results above £100,000 understate tax. For Canada: Ontario surtax (20% on Ontario tax over $5,818, plus 36% over $7,446) and the Ontario Health Premium (up to $900) are not modelled, so Ontario tax is understated at higher incomes.
