Italy vs UAE: Income Tax Compared (2026)

Only one side of this comparison taxes a salary. United Arab Emirates takes nothing from an employee's pay in the standard model, while Italy applies 3 bands from 23% to 43%. On a $100,000 salary that leaves $100,068 in United Arab Emirates against $56,214 in Italy. The gap is $8,065 at a $25,000 salary and $90,653 at $200,000.

Each row prices the same job in both countries: the gross figures are the same US dollar salary converted into each currency at the reference rates of 28 October 2026 (1 USD = 0.8982 EUR and 3.6725 AED), rounded to the nearest 500. The last column converts the United Arab Emirates take-home back into EUR at the same rate and subtracts the Italy take-home, so a positive figure means more take-home pay in the country named. Income tax includes any regional tax, levies, credits and rebates in the standard model. It says nothing about what the money buys locally — see the purchasing-power points in the questions below the table where they apply.

What stands out

The two systems, in short

Italy

Italy taxes a salary through 3 bands from 23% to 43%, with the top rate applying from €50,000. Employee contributions are INPS pension and social contributions (IVS) at 9.19% on pay up to €122,295 and INPS additional contribution (pay above first pension band) at 1% on pay up to €122,295; at the $100,000 salary level they add up to $9,584. At the $100,000 level the total deduction is $43,987: $34,402 of income tax and $9,584 of contributions, an effective rate of 43.9%. Regional surtax (addizionale regionale, 1.23% to 3.33% depending on the region) and municipal surtax (addizionale comunale, 0% to 0.9%) are EXCLUDED by design; most residents pay roughly 1-4 points more overall than the model shows.

United Arab Emirates

United Arab Emirates is the simple side of this comparison: there is no personal income tax on employment income, and the standard model charges no employee social contributions either, so take-home pay equals gross pay at every level in the table. UAE corporate tax (9%) can apply to a natural person carrying on a business with turnover above AED 1,000,000, but wages, personal investment income and real estate investment income are expressly excluded from that turnover test; employment salary is never taxed.

FAQ

Italy vs United Arab Emirates — frequently asked questions

The United Arab Emirates employee keeps more: $49,966 against $32,080 in Italy, a difference of $17,886. In United Arab Emirates the $50,000 salary loses $0 to income tax and $0 to contributions; in Italy it loses $13,416 and $4,604.
The United Arab Emirates employee keeps more: $100,068 against $56,214, a difference of $43,854. United Arab Emirates deducts nothing at all, while Italy deducts $43,987 from the same salary — that deduction is the whole story behind the gap.
United Arab Emirates keeps everything at every level, so the gap tracks what Italy deducts: $8,065 at a $25,000 salary, $43,854 at $100,000 and $90,653 at $200,000.
Both sides model a single employee with standard allowances only, so personal deductions, credits and family circumstances are outside the figures. For Italy: The employment tax credit (detrazione per lavoro dipendente, up to EUR 1,955 and tapering to zero at EUR 50,000) and the cuneo fiscale benefits for incomes under EUR 40,000 are excluded, so tax at low-to-middle incomes is overstated. Employee INPS contributions are in reality deductible from the IRPEF base; that deduction is not modelled. For United Arab Emirates: No employee social contributions for expatriates. Pension contributions (GPSSA) apply to UAE nationals (and certain GCC nationals) only and are not modelled.
