The system

How income tax works in Ontario

On $105,500 a year — about US$75,000 — the combined deductions in this model are $28,078: $15,520 of federal income tax, $6,788 of Ontario province tax and $5,770 in payroll contributions, leaving take-home pay of $77,422 (an effective rate of 26.6%). Change the salary in the calculator to run any other figure through the same two layers.

The province tax starts from taxable income: gross pay minus the basic personal amount of $12,989. The bands in the table below then apply to that taxable figure, rising from 5.05% to 13.16%. The band thresholds in the file are the statutory thresholds less the basic personal amount, because the model applies the bands after the allowance; that is the same arithmetic as the legal non-refundable credit for the standard case, and it matches how the Canada country page presents its provincial layer.

The federal layer is the same model as the Canada calculator: a basic personal amount (federal) of $16,452, federal bands running from 14% to 33%, plus the employee payroll contributions Canada Pension Plan, CPP2 (second additional CPP), Employment Insurance. The Canada calculator page sets out the federal notes and simplifications in full.

Bands apply to taxable income — gross pay after the basic personal amount of $12,989. The thresholds shown are the statutory thresholds less that basic personal amount, because the model applies the bands after the allowance; the result is identical to the legal credit calculation for the standard case. Federal tax is charged on top, on the federal bands shown on the Canada page.

Scope

What this calculator leaves out

Ontario — province layer

  • Ontario surtax is NOT included in the brackets: for 2026 it adds 20% of Ontario tax above $5,818 plus a further 36% of Ontario tax above $7,446, which lifts the effective top provincial rate from 13.16% to 20.53% on the top slice. This model excludes the surtax, so Ontario tax is understated at higher incomes (the same treatment as the Canada country page, which uses these same Ontario figures).
  • The Ontario Health Premium is also excluded: a separate levy of up to $900 a year on taxable income over $20,000, charged in steps ($300 from $25,000, $450 from $36,000, $600 from $38,500, $750 from $48,600 and $900 from $72,600, reached in full at $200,000); its thresholds are not indexed.
  • Bracket thresholds shown are the statutory thresholds ($53,891 / $107,785 / $150,000 / $220,000) less the basic personal amount, because the model applies brackets after the allowance; the result is identical to the legal credit calculation for the standard case. The first two thresholds and the BPA are indexed (1.9% for 2026); the $150,000 and $220,000 thresholds are not indexed.
  • The Ontario tax reduction, which can wipe out small Ontario tax bills for low incomes, is not modelled.

Federal layer — summary

  • Provincial tax: Ontario shown; other provinces and territories differ
  • Federal and Ontario basic personal amounts are non-refundable credits at the lowest rate in law; they are modelled as allowances, which is arithmetically identical for the standard case
  • Federal basic personal amount phases down from $16,452 to $14,829 between $181,440 and $258,482 of income; the phase-down is not modelled
  • Ontario surtax (20% on Ontario tax over $5,818, plus 36% over $7,446) and the Ontario Health Premium (up to $900) are not modelled, so Ontario tax is understated at higher incomes
  • Canada employment amount credit and credits for CPP/EI contributions are not modelled
  • Bracket thresholds shown in the file are statutory thresholds minus the basic personal amount, because the engine applies brackets after the allowance

No. This is a planning estimate built on standard allowances for a single employee, using the enacted 2026 schedules checked in October 2026 against KPMG — Canadian Personal Tax Tables 2026 (rates confirmed to CRA payroll tables) and the federal source below.
